Pay Per Click (PPC) Defined
Simply put, advertisers bid on keywords and phrases that they think their prospective clients are searching on in engines like Yahoo! and Google. The advertiser uses the keywords or phrases in a sponsored link, which is a fancy name for a text ad. Bids can be for as little as five cents and go up to hundreds of dollars for real competitive words and phrases.
The sponsored link appears just above (or to the right of) the results on a search result page. If a viewer clicks on the link, the advertiser pays for the “click through” in the amount that he or she bid for the keyword or phrase. The goal, of course, is that the viewer will buy the product or service once he or she lands on the advertiser’s website.
PPC—How It Works In Real Life
Let’s say you bid eighty cents on the words “business coach boston.” If someone searches on these words and he or she sees your sponsored link and clicks on it, that’s when you’d pay the publisher of your sponsored link (such as Google). If no one clicks through, you don’t pay anything to the publisher for that ad.
What happens if someone decides to click on your sponsored link over and over? Luckily, search engines have processes in place to monitor “click fraud.” While click fraud was a concern in the early days of PPC, it’s become less so now.
PPC—Your Targeted Advertising Dollars At Work
The nice thing about PPC is that you’re in control of your advertising budget and can even set limits. For example, if you don’t want to spend more than $200, you’ll be alerted when you reach this limit and your sponsored link will no longer be available.
